2019 Studio Louwrien Wijers Louwrien Wijers (born Aalten, January 26, 1941) visual artist and writer, but I feel a sculptor. After eighteen years, 1968-1986, with Joseph Beuys (1921-1986) like him I do see writing, speaking and thinking as sculpture too. Fluxus inspired me already in 1964 in Paris. That was the way I wanted to go. My work is both mental sculpture and material sculpture. My most known and important mental scupture is 'Art meets Science and Spirituality in a changing Economy' realized in the Stedelijk Museum in Amsterdam in 1990 and redone in 1996 at Kunsthal Charlottenborg in Copenhagen. From 1998 to 2005 my focus was on ‘Compassionate Economy’, it brought me to the clear conclusion that 'Satisficing not Maximising', as the Russian economist Stanislav Menshikov had told me, is the trend in economics today. In 2010 I clearly felt that my decree ‘No Lying / No Killing / No Stealing // Grains / Vegetables / Beans’ can be a firm basis for a fruitful world economy, world household, as the meaning of ‘economy’ actually is ‘household’. From 2012 the power of food on our future turned more relevant with ‘Cooking Together / Eating Together / Speaking Together’, meetings where Egon Hanfstingl taught how to daily cook fresh food and where I made people talk together at length. “A permanent dialogue concerning all human problems has to be initiated,” Beuys always said. And: “A social dialogue, I call it the ʻSocial Sculptureʼ, that for me is the most important work of art.” he explained. Then my catchphrase ‘Science is the Past / Art is the Present / Food is the Future’ was added to our food actions. Moving to Friesland from Amsterdam after almost 50 years on the suggestion of the Mondriaan Foundation I started ‘Gueststudio Louwrien Wijers’ where my skills and my archive could be shared with guest artists who were staying for two months. When in 2017 Friesland’s provincial capital Leeuwarden was announced ‘Cultural Capital of Europe’ for the year 2018, it was my wish to make known that Beuys originates from Friesland and brought his direct-democracy ideas from there. I made the event ‘100DaysBeuys’. From 8 June -16 September 2018 speakers who had known Beuys well came to Ferwerd to explain about the many subjects Beuys had tied to his ‘Social Sculpture’, such as the Direct Democracy through referendum, a Basic Income for Everybody, the Expanded Concept of Art, Creativity is our real Capital, Everybody an Artist and let’s change our legal system back to the pre-roman Celtic laws. From end 2018 on ‘Tomorrow’s Language’ and ‘Saint Society’ are my subjects for shows and talks.
